How often do area codes change?

My experience is that they add new area codes when they are close to running out of numbers. Sometimes, when they add the new area code, things get changed around. In the state I live in, the area codes have been slightly rearranged every time one is added. It hasnt really changed my area code at this point, but I know someone who's number changed with every area code addition.



I the area I grew up in, they are getting to a point where they need to add another one soon (over the next couple of years). I believe what they are talking about doing is adding an overlapped layer with a new area code.How often do area codes change?
Lmao area codes don't change if they change it would be like taking out all the stop lights in the world.



area codes once they are aprooved they stay for ever, they make new ones though that's for sure but never removed, because area codes have so much info do you have any idea all the proccess they have to go to? it would take like 4 or 7 years to sort information again.
