How far do area codes in phone numbers reach?

I'm going to another city (but still sorta close, like 40 miles away) and I want to know if when I give my phone number to a girl, if I should include the area code. If I don't need to, I would just make a fool of myself,How far do area codes in phone numbers reach?
the area code covers the LATA. The LATA can be a whole state or a 4 square mile area.
You should provide the area code in brackets. You shouldn't assume the person you give your number to has the same area code, or that they can dial numbers without an area code.

Note that some areas enforce 10 digit dialing rules. In this case, the person must dial with the area code or their call will not go through.

Many cities have overlapping area codes, and it can be ambiguous if one is not provided. For example, my city has 4 different area codes that are within my local calling area. I have 3 phone lines, two with one area code, one with another area code. My cell phone has a third area code, and my Dad's cell phone has yet another area code. They are all considered local to each other.

So as I said, you should include the area code with brackets. You cannot assume the person has the same area code even if they are your next door neighbor. The geographic region an area code covers is based on population density, not distance or area. How far do area codes in phone numbers reach?
In today's climate, it's never foolish to recite your phone as a 10 digit number. In our state, we have an overlay code, so we could give the 7 digit number and let the listener assume it's the main area code, but 10 digits makes it accurate. And yes, our area code is about 120 miles by 90 miles.

the distance that an area code covers varies by the density of the population... some states have one area code for the entire state... while other cities, such as NYC has 212, 718, 917, 646, 347 all within the 5 boro's...

i can not see how you would feel foolish if you provided someone with your area code with your phone number... even if it was still within the same area code...
