Is there any system behind phone area codes in the US?

If so I can't figure it out. Is there any system or why don't they seem to have any system?Is there any system behind phone area codes in the US?

Now days there is no system. When area codes were first used the areas that were most called were given lower numbers. I can remember when I was a small tot, that we had a party line so when you wanted to make a call the first thing you would do is pick up the phone and listen to see if the other house in the party was using the phone, and then dial if they were not. Even worse than that when I used to fight forest fires we had an old type of phone that had a crank on the side that when you rang up a number (consisting of short rings and long rings, kind of like morse code) every one on the party line phone would ring and if it was yours you would answer.
