How did the system of Area Codes arise?

Area Codes are baffling me... for instance

718 is New York City Metro Area, New York (Queens, Staten Island, The Bronx, and Brooklyn)while 719 is SE Colorado: Pueblo, Colorado Springs...

where did this come from? who decide philadelphia would be 215 when south jersey was 609?How did the system of Area Codes arise?
Well, you do realize many new area codes have been added over the last decade or so, right? The reason is because of the growing amount of necessary phone numbers. Without area codes, you could at first dial 867-5309 and perhaps *not* get someone named Jenny. ; )

There are only so many possible phone numbers, so having area codes allowed for the 7-digit "prefix-suffix" combination to be reused elsewhere.

(EDIT: In brdcsemstud's example, she cited NYC. Manhattan's area code is 212 - obviously, if the rest of NYC is 718, Manhattan couldn't be 719 or 717, else there would be a lot of needless confusion. That's why 719 is the area code for a location far away from NYC.

And I'm sure you're all aware that instead of having only 1-800 numbers for businesses, there are now 1-888, 1-877, and 1-866 numbers. I don't know why area codes were determined in random fashion, but I suppose there's no real need to have had a "scientific" basis for them, huh?)
Great question. I'll research this one.

The guy above is obviously correct, but why so randomly? How did the system of Area Codes arise?
there are too many people for just the seven number system so to be able to re-use osme numbers they made the area codesHow did the system of Area Codes arise?
I think they put a bunch of numbers in a hat and let a chimp pick them. Really, no obvious sense at all. Maybe a secret algorithm?
