Developed in the 1940's, and first implemented in 1951 by AT%26amp;T, the NANP set out to simplify and facilitate direct dialing of long distance calls. Area code 201 was the first implemented under the plan.i think they started because more people started using phones and people having so many kids like the ones with more than 5 kids, that's 5+ more phone numbers they need when they get their own cell phones
